To me, nothing says Summer quite like ice cream.  I remember, as a kid, getting ridiculously excited when I heard the unmistakable music of the ice cream truck.  It rarely came down our street, so it was always a huge treat when it did.  Sure, the same kinds of ice cream were sold at the grocery store (for a fraction of the price), but it tasted better coming from that truck!

Well, I haven't seen the ice cream man in years.  I know: It's so sad.  But not to worry!  I now own an ice cream maker, and that brings me to my Works for Me Wednesday.  Today's theme is "favorite Summer recipes," and the first thing that popped into my mind wasn't one recipe, but a book of them: The Perfect Scoop, by David Lebovitz.

If you thought treats from the ice cream truck were good, wait until you try making your own with these recipes!  Here are a few of the flavors in the book:

  • Chocolate-Peanut Butter
  • Butterscotch Pecan
  • Chocolate-Raspberry
  • Toasted Almond & Candied Cherry
  • Rum Raisin
Oh, wait!  What about these, more unusual, recipes:
  • Basil Ice Cream
  • Black Pepper Ice Cream
  • Avocado Ice Cream
  • Fresh Fig Ice Cream
Not to mention frozen yogurts, gelatos, and sorbets.  Oh, and the chapter on "vessels," with recipes for brownies, sandwich cookies, ice cream cones, and more.  And then there are the chapters on mix-ins and toppings.  This is my favorite ice cream cookbook ever.

After you make your ice cream, don't forget to sing:
"I scream; you scream; we all scream for ICE CREAM!"

'Cuz, you know, ice cream in summertime Works for Me.

My hubby & I eat ice cream almost daily, and I've been wanting to get an ice cream maker for our home - what kind do you suggest? I've seen a lot of bad reviews about some...so I'm cautiously waiting for someone to recommend a good one.

We have a Cuisinart ice cream maker. (I think we originally got it from Williams Sonoma, but the one I linked to is the same model.)

Now, I've never tried any of the super-fancy, uber-expensive models, but I have to say I love the Cuisinart. I keep the bowl in the freezer so it's always ready, and it does a great job. Plus, it doesn't take up a lot of room and it's easy to clean.

I don't like having a lot of small kitchen appliances; for example, I don't own a food processor. However, it's pretty much impossible to make good ice cream without an ice cream machine, so I'd say it's well worth it! =)
